The Disappearing Lake. Near Jasper.
So, we travelled from Banff to Jasper. Saw some great sights along the way, as we transitioned through the ‘Ice Park’ area with many glaciers. The main one we visited is shown below.
Meantime, we also observed the devastation of the bushfires that hit the area of Jasper in 2024, with loss of human life, destroying one third of the homes in Jasper, and burning over 36,000 hectares of forest. Very sad, yet the majesty of the Rockies, more lakes and streams in this area retain their special place, even as this community will take years to best recover.
Today was very wet and cloudy for our cruise on Lake Maligne yet we could still appreciate its beauty among the mist and rain.

Lake Maligne, through the mist.
Now to the other pictures on the road to Jasper including the glaciers, rivers and lakes.

Bow River, Alberta. Flows all the way to the Atlantic.

Poona Lake, Alberta. Fed by a glacier, with its typical blue colour consequently.

Athabasca Glacier. Yes, we were bussed and ‘monstered trucked’ there.

Passing so many beautiful lakes.

Another lake to admire and photograph. The list goes on and on …

And randomly, the reflections in the lake. So smooth and calm this fine warm day approaching Jasper.

More of the Disappearing Lake. Drains dry by end of Spring.

Waterfalls aplenty.

The flat valleys among the giant mountains, with so many streams.

Still snow leftover from Winter, on the highest peaks.
And then there is the commitment to conservation and keeping the special animals safe. So in these parts, there are special animal crossing to avoid road kill, so animals are fenced off from the major highways but can use these crossings, whether bears, wolves, bisons, elks, etc.

Animal crossing, seen from our bus.

And here is one of these bears. But like the focus, they are somewhat elusive, and dangerous.

And on a sad note, some of the bushfire devastation around Jasper.
