Mt Elizabeth Station to El Questro. 20180609

Today’s focus was to get to our destination unscathed as we had quite a few kilometres to travel. Ironically we were relieved to be back on the GRR road after our 36km bypass overnight, given the road to Mt Elizabeth was very corrugated and windy. This driver also discovered that the combination of speed, corners, sand and corrugations could leave you a little vulnerable, as we had a few sideways wobbles at speed, trying to overcome the corrugations, but then caught on the unsigned corners on the private road. A good lesson in four wheel and off-road driving that fortunately resulted in no harm, other than my TP racing heart rate. Thankfully our Pajero vehicle is very well mannered and kept us upright and straight soon enough.

While today was about driving, there were four specific highlights, and one technological one. In order, scones, jam and cream at Ellenbrea Station (owned by Rina Grollo and his wife), a chance access to a mobile signal at a lookout that soon disappeared down the road (so caught up with family, and news, briefly), crossing the mighty Pentecost River, our first major river crossing (and not getting out to check out depths as our black fella friend from an earlier stop had already warned us of salties there), seeing the iconic Cockburn Range, and finally, our salubrious accommodation, great meal and wonderful environs of El Questro.

Just one of the multitude of beautiful views we saw today on our travels. The Kimberley might be dry this time of the year but it is not a desert. Indeed, in some places, water is plentiful.

Our first view of the Cockburn Range approaching El Questro. Further images below too.
