El Questro to Kununurra. Emma Gorge. 20180611

Today we completed the GRR journey but not before we toured two final destinations within the El Questro precinct. After an early start at 7am, we briefly visited the thermal pools at Zebedee Springs and then the beautiful Emma Gorge, a class 4 walk about 2km each way. Then resting in Kununurra now for two nights. Nice accommodation here on the lake (see below) and the weather has cooled this evening after a rather hot day around 35C. And this is Winter!

Zebedee Springs pool. About 28 to 32C. Gets very busy later in the morning and then only open to special El Questro resort guests and tours after 12pm.

Emma Gorge. More rock hopping. Class 4 walk.

First pool near end of Emma Gorge walk. A little more effort required to get to the next higher pool but also to see the large and spectacular waterfall there.

The final pool. Cool yes, but also a small thermal pool off to the right. Just stunning really.

Emma Gorge waterfall. If you swim and be under the falling water, it actually hurts on the skin given the height it is falling from.

We got in early and were nearly on our own. By mid-morning there were 30-40 people there although still plenty of room. So refreshing, like all the other Kimberley pools we have swum in. Worth the walk, although very hot when we returned to the car park, needing another swim.

The GRR terminates at this T intersection, with Wyndham and Kununurra roughly same distances (50km) west or east respectively. Aside from getting into Emma Gorge, the entry road into El Questro to this intersection is all bitumen, so easy day driving today.

The sign as you enter the GRR at north eastern end, per above T intersection.

Driving over the dam wall entering Kununurra, with the Ord River shown, with Lake Kununurra on the other side, which in turn is downstream from the dam at Lake Argyle, some 70km by road to the east. The town of Kununurra was established in the 1960’s as part of the building of the dam on the Ord River, creating Lake Argyle.

The view from tonight’s accommodation, looking out over Lake Kununurra. Note the rocky outcrop in the background and its change of colour at sunset. We missed the best of tonight’s sunset although we did see the lovely shade on this distant hill.
