Exmouth day 1. 20180529

We left from Yardie Homestead to travel the short distance to Exmouth today. On the way we visited the old Vlamingh Head lighthouse to the west of Exmouth and enjoyed the panoramic 360 degree views from there. Looking west over the Indian Ocean, several oil or gas rigs were visible offshore. Also the view of the most northerly tip of the Exmouth area is apparent, as well as the Exmouth Gulf to the east and the ranges of the Cape Range National Park to the south. Very pleasant.

However, the bulk of our day was spent hiking on the eastern side of the National Park and we were rewarded with spectacular views, see below. Typically these views require access via 4WD tracks but we compromised and hiked the return distance of 16 km from the bitumen. Rather weary tonight, very proud of my TP for her endurance and some pictures to show below.

Then time to check into our new camp, load up on water, meet the neighbours, have a social drink, and then my wonderful TP cooked pasta in the van. Now time for dishes and to retire, before further activities on the ocean tomorrow. Weather remains fine and warm.

View below is looking north to the tip of the Exmouth area. Notice all the telecommunications masts in the background, a feature of this area, also given its history as a former spy base for the Americans.

Shot Hole Canyon. Only accessible by 4WD below or across from Charles Knife Canyon by 4WD and a hike above. In our case, it was more hiking, even though some intrepid (or stupid) tourists tackled the track in 2WD vehicles. Not in our bus though, that would have been complete madness. In any case, the pictures and views were special. All sea is the water to the east and south of Exmouth on the gulf, not Indian Ocean.

The rest of these pictures are Charles Knife Canyon.
