Coral Bay day 1. 20180522

After enjoying a sumptuos meal out last night in Carnarvon, enjoying the delicious fresh snapper and other tasty food plus wine, we set off a little later for today’s journey. Before we left town we visited the space museum and telecommunications centre. Carnarvon played a key role as a ground station for much of NASA’s space program from the 1960’s onward. We were pleased we visited here and capped off a trip to Carnarvon that was more fun than we expected.

By late lunch we had completed the relatively short trip to Coral Bay, travelling through a very dry landscape and semi-desert. Not a great deal of wildlife although there were still the ever present feral goats, and not far from Coral Bay, many of these termite mounds as shown below. Weather fine still and roads very good, although a little narrow in spots. The odd road train too, although many long and straight roads for passing as required, although Boris is speed limited to 110 kmh so one has to be judicious if passing.

And then there was Coral Bay, emerging like an ocean oasis from the adjacent desert. Clearly a popular tourist destination so while a small town, quite busy nonetheless. After a short rest after a late lunch, a late afternoon snorkel was had on the beach reef. Interesting but I suspect there are more significant reefs around the corner. We have also invested in a dive trip tomorrow so much more to report on the reef diving front then.

Meantime just a beautiful evening before an expected fine day again tomorrow. Camp is quiet very early so our usual 9pm sleep time seems to be late in comparison to many others. Tonight probably an earlier one anyway. It is so much easier here to retire early and get up early.

Today’s images are the dish at Carnarvon, termite mound east of Coral Bay, and Coral Bay in daylight across the road from our camp, and at sunset from the same position. Yes, more indulgence but the sunsets just keep coming and do not disappoint. Take care!
