Today’s highlight was visiting the Blowholes area near Pt Quobba just north of Carnarvon, being about a 140 km round trip. Potentially a dangerous area on the rocks there in wild weather and high seas. Today was relatively calm yet you can still see images of the roaring seas below. The main highlight was the blowhole captured neatly by my travelling companion. It was a bit of an intermittent show but entertaining when it blew.
As a contrast just round the point to the south was a wonderful snorkelling spot, as two shots below show. A very attractive coral reef here with many colourful and diverse corals as well as many fish of different sizes and colours. Some clams also although did not see any manta rays, reef sharks or turtles but they are in the vicinity and further north as we venture up the coral coast over the next week and more.
Spent several hours relaxing at Quobba and chatting to a fine young English couple and others. People are very relaxed and excited to be at such beautiful and impressive places. Weather is very warm, water temperature was comfortable although lots of flies in the middle of the day.
Soon enough back to Carnarvon, confirm my lap top computer was dead (such is life) so posted it back to the Sunny Coast to retrieve the data later. Hopefully it can all be retrieved and meantime it does restrict my video efforts but hey, now I have the iPad.
Finally visited the one mile jetty and learned more about the search for the HMAS Sydney II in 2008, and the rescue and subsequent management of the German survivors of the Kormoran in 1942. Quite a tale but sad too as the discovery of the Germans also confirmed the demise of the 645 sailors on the Sydney. Sadly too the jetty was closed due to disrepair but you may just see in the image attached its length if you upsize the image below.
Next out for dinner with our ‘neighbours’ and off to Coral Bay tomorrow. Take care one and all.
